Beyond Binary Quantum Information
We’d like to congratulate Euan Mackay and Dylan Danese, who recently finished their senior undergraduate projects in our research group.
Euan is going on to do his MSc in Theoretical Physics at the University of Edinburgh, while Dylan is continuing onto the integrated MSc in Physics at Heriot-Watt.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the lab,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a browser tab,
The laser was focused on the crystal with care,
In the hope that pixel entanglement soon would be there!
In our recent paper published in the journal Quantum, we demonstrate high-dimensional entanglement of “pixels” of light with a record dimensionality, quality, and measurement speed! We achieved entangled state fidelities of up to 94.4% in a 19-dimensional state-space, entanglement in up to 55 local dimensions, and an entanglement-of-formation of up to 4 ebits. We were also able to improve upon the time taken by previous techniques for measuring entanglement by more than two orders of magnitude! This work was done in collaboration with our friends in Vienna and the Czech Republic.
This week we are attending Q-Turn 2020, an international quantum information workshop series being held virtually this year. I have also had the honour of serving as programme committee chair for this very exciting event!
In addition to showcasing cutting-edge scientific research on all things quantum, Q-Turn 2020 has an awareness programme focussing on a wide range of issues such as mental health and harassment in academia.
Our group will be represented by Vatshal and Natalia, who are presenting a talk and a poster respectively on some of our recent work. We hope to see you there!

Our recent work on unscrambling entanglement through a complex medium is featured on the cover of the November issue of Nature Physics!
The cover image was designed by our very own Saroch and depicts higher order optical modes getting scrambled inside a multi-mode fibre.
We are happy to share that Mehul has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant by the European Research Council! The PIQUaNT project (Photonics for High-Dimensional Quantum Networking) will focus on technologies for the manipulation and control of structured light in space and time, with an emphasis on entanglement-based applications. We will soon be advertising PhD and postdoc positions for this project, so please keep an eye out. For more, please read the Heriot-Watt press release.
