Assistant Professor in Physics
Grade 8 – £45,585 to £54,395 plus benefits
Note: We especially encourage applications from women and other underrepresented groups in Physics and Engineering.
The Institute of Photonics and Quantum Science (IPaQS) at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh is seeking a talented new colleague to join our thriving community of researchers. We invite applications from outstanding early career scientists for a permanent Assistant Professorship in Physics, with a focus on Quantum Science and Technology (QST). We are looking for candidates whose research programme will strongly complement our existing strengths in Quantum Photonics research at IPaQS. We are open to applications from both experimentalists and applied quantum information theorists, and especially encourage applications from women and other underrepresented groups in Physics.
You will be expected to build an independent research group carrying out cutting-edge research in your field. You will demonstrate the ability to develop and lead independent research in QST and possess a track-record of excellent scientific output commensurate with your career stage. You will show the capacity to obtain independent funding for your research and form strong interdisciplinary collaborations both within and beyond IPaQS. You will contribute to teaching across Heriot-Watt’s undergraduate Physics curriculum and be involved in scientific outreach and engagement activities within the local community. The principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are central to IPaQS and we seek an individual who can demonstrate a strong personal commitment to the same.
We are a research-led, fast-growing department and our staff produce exciting and innovative research that is consistently world-leading. Areas of focus within QST at IPaQS currently include quantum entanglement and networking (Malik, Fedrizzi), imaging and detection (Leach, Buller), solid state quantum devices (Gerardot, Bonato, Mazzera) and quantum information theory (Gauger, Andersson). We are partners in two UK National Quantum Technology Hubs in Quantum Enhanced Imaging and Quantum Communications, and lead an EPSRC Centre-to-Centre collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) Caltech. The UK Research and Excellence Framework (REF2021) saw Heriot-Watt Physics ranked first in Scotland and 4th in the UK for world-leading research.
Your application must include (1) a full curriculum vitae and (2) a personal statement (up to 1 side of A4) summarising how you will contribute to the IPaQS community and deepen our existing strengths in quantum information science and technology. The statement should also outline what DEI principles mean to you and how you will incorporate them in your work. In addition, your application should include (3) a detailed research plan (up to 2 sides of A4) that references existing and potential academic collaborations, sources of funding, and industry links as appropriate. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
